Dal Chawal

(Serves 5-6)





Ingredients for Dal


  1. Take 1.5 cup arhar dal / pigeon pea (wash it well)

  2. 4-5 cups water

  3. 2 -3 tomatoes chopped

  4. 1 tsp salt

  5. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder


Ingredients for Tadka


  1. 1 big onion sliced

  2. 1 tbsp mustard seeds

  3. 15-20 curry leaves

  4. 1 tbsp grated ginger

  5. 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds

  6. 2 tb spoon mustard oil

  7. 1/2 tea spoon hing

  8. Salt to taste

  9. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  10. 1 tsp dry mango powder

  11. 2 tbsp Sambar Masala

For Dal

  1. Take a cooker, add washed arhar dal, water, add chopped tomatoes.

  2. Add salt and turmeric powder.

  3. Cover it with lid and let 2-3 whistles come.



For Tadka


  1. Take a pan and heat oil.

  2. Add mustard seeds.

  3. Add curry leaves, fenugreek seeds hing, and saute it well.

  4. Add grated ginger, mix well and cook for a min or two.

  5. Add onions and mix well.

  6. Cover it with a lid and let it cook for 5-7 mins on low medium flame,

  7. Add sambar masala and other spices.

  8. Mix it well.

  9. Add 1/2 cup water and bring a boil.

  10. Now add the prepared dal and mix well.

  11. Let it cook for 10-15 mins on low medium flame.



For Serving
